At the tip of Daepyeong-dong, slipways for hauling ships out of the water and repair yards line the shore.

The village is said to have taken its name from the kkang-kkang sound of hammers striking ship hulls to remove rust and shells.

For many years, much of this work was carried out by local women who came to be known as the "Kkangkkangi ajimae."

Ship-repair yards and machine shops are still operating here today. Between them, murals and public artworks have been added throughout the neighborhood.

As you walk through the alleys, you will come across large paintings covering old building walls and artworks made from marine and industrial materials.

The village museum and information center also offer a brief introduction to the area's history and ship-repair industry.

Walk a little farther from Kkangkkangi Art Village and you will reach Namhang Market.

The market developed as more people settled in Yeongdo after the Korean War and has remained part of the neighborhood for decades.

Seafood, side dishes, fruit, and everyday household goods fill the stalls, giving you a glimpse of daily life in Yeongdo.

It feels more like a neighborhood market than a tourist attraction, and that is part of its appeal. Pick up some fish cakes, rice cakes, or seasonal fruit and enjoy them as you continue through the surrounding streets.

Opening hours and closing days vary by shop, so afternoon is generally a better time to visit than late evening.
